Site of the Battle of Austerlitz.
Close to Austerlitz in 1805, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte decisively defeated the Russian and Austrian armies of Czar Alexander I and Emperor Francis II. French army of 68,000 troops reached brilliant victory over a joined Russian-Austrian army of over 89,000 troops in one day.
Subsequent peace agreement was signed in Slavkov Chateau.
The Slavkov Chateau, built on the site of medieval stronghold, was turned into a grand stately Baroque residence during 17th and 18th centuries. Today you can visit chateau interiors, an exhibition devoted to the Battle of Austerlitz and a gallery of classical statutes. The site is surrounded by an English park with fountains and ornamental sculptures.
