The history of Kutna Hora is inseparably linked to silver mining: initially set up as a mining camp, in the second half of 13th century it quickly changed into a royal town. Kutna Hora experienced great prosperity in the reign of the king Wenceslas II (13th century), when silver coins (Prague groschen) were minted here using silver extracted from the local mines.
