Cheb One of the oldest town in Bohemia.

Gothic and Renaissance town Cheb is one of the westernmost seats in the Czech Republic. The historical region of Cheb had been a part of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1322 the town became the property of the Czech Kingdom. Since the beginning of the 13th century, Cheb has been privileged with self-administration which ranks it among the oldest towns in Bohemia.
Cheb is also remembered as the site of the assassination of general Albrecht of Valdstejn (Albrecht von Wallenstein) and his loyal officers in 1634. The importance of the town decreased somewhat after the Second World War, and the expulsion of the local Germans which followed.

Today Cheb takes pride of in its astonishingly well preserved historical centre. The no.1 sight is the Romanesque castle, founded by the Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa I after 1167, especially its unique one-storey chapel.
In the streets of Cheb you can see many Gothic and Renaissance houses. The monumental Church of St Nicholas and St Elizabeth (Chram sv. Mikulase a sv. Alzbety), originally Romanesque, was rebuilt after the fire of 1270 and acquired its current Gothic appearance between 1456 and 1470. The Minorite Monastery was founded in the first half of the 13th century and has retained its Gothic shape until today.

Minimum recommended stay in Cheb: 0,5 day
