Zatec is world famous for hops which are a key ingredient of Czech beer.
Zatec was founded in the middle of 13th century in Gothic style. The royal town was burnt by the Swedes in 1639 during the Thirty Years War. A follow-up recostruction gave the town its current Baroque and Classicist face. The original Gothic castle was rebuilt into a brewery and the main square is surrounded by burghers' houses.
The town is proud of several ancient churches from 13th century, the town hall from 1559 and a unique suspension bridge from 1826 which is the oldest one in the Czech Republic.
Today Zatec is famous for over 700-year-long tradition of hops-growing which is shown in The Museum of Hops and Beermaking.
