The longest Romaneque basilica in Bohemia.
A Benedictine abbey was founded here in 1115 by Prince Vladislav I. After the monastery had been built, the importance of the former village steadily rose. Soon after 1230, Kladruby was declared a town and was granted trade privilege. Around the mid-14th century, the settlement moved to a more advantageous place near the monastery where it remains today.
The main attraction is the Abbey Church of the Holy Virgin, rebuilt between 1712 and 1726 by Giovanni Santini in his extraordinary "baroque Gothic" style seen nowhere outside Bohemia. The church has the original floor plan of a Romanesque basilica, the longest in Bohemia (85 m).
